It's another day in Sylvarant. Emil's journey to save the world is currently paused, as his travel companions all got caught up waiting in line for the fortune-teller. Yeah, it's another one of those days...
As he looks for something else to do, he hears a troublesome rumor. A little boy was spotted all alone in the desert, where he could be attacked by monsters any moment!
"We'd better do something, quick," Emil says, fear and determination clear in his voice. "Come on, Maa!" he tells his Fenrir companion, a great white and blue ice-elemental wolf. Maa barks in affirmation and follows Emil as he rushes out into the desert.
The Triet Desert, usually covered in blazing hot sand, currently has mounds of snow and patches of ice covering it due to the strange weather phenomena Emil's journey is meant to put an end to. Though the desert's been warming slightly already, it's easy for an unsuspecting traveller to slip on icy sand. Emil's fairly used to the terrain by now, so he has no trouble making his way through, keeping an eye out for travellers...
Navigating a desert isn't impossible for Trip, Unova has its fair share... he isn't entirely helpless either, not with his Pokemon! But, he doesn't understand the nature of the monsters in this place...
Pointing his Pokedex at one and receiving no information isn't reassuring—his Pokemon immediately come to his aid, Serperior releasing itself.
But, Trip didn't want a repeat of the events in Castelia city, so even though he could justify more in self-defense, he limited his orders in subduing the unfamiliar creature and rendering it unable to battle, rather than take more extreme measures.
As soon as he spots the kid in the distance, Emil shifts into Ratatosk mode and barks an order for Maa to follow. He analyzes the situation he's running into as he's heading towards it. An unfamiliar snake monster... that seems to be protecting the kid from the usual monsters you see around here? Got it, that one's an ally.
Sorry about the lessons you learned, Trip, but Emil's going all out on these monsters with a sword, making quick work of them with Maa's help.
Once the monsters are all down or ran away, Emil sheathes his sword and turns to Trip and Serperior, eyes widening as he recognizes the boy.
The sight of the very quickly dispatched monsters is alarming to Trip, who looks. Horrified. But silent, watching Emil. He recognizes him more quickly, but is too stunned to speak until addressed.
"... yes," he began suspiciously, frowning. "... thank you, but... was it necessary to kill them? I think we were doing fine on our own."
Rude, but he genuinely isn't trying to be, right now... he's just hoping the monsters weren't needlessly killed just for his sake.
Still with red eyes and the Ratatosk Mode body language, Emil glances at the defeated monsters, before looking back at Trip. How naïve, he thinks.
"You were taking them too lightly," Emil tells him, voice deep. "If they die, they're too weak. If they live, they've learned their lesson, and will think again before attacking anybody. And if you die, you're weak, and saying you were trying not to kill them doesn't change that."
Emil's certain at least some of the monsters he defeated are just unconscious, though. He doesn't go out of his way to kill them, but he doesn't go out of his way to avoid it either. He knows exactly how deadly monsters can be.
Does Emil have more control? Well, you be the judge of that, Trip. Emil's eyes are still red as he turns to pet his wolf buddy on the snout.
Trip's eyes narrow into a very cold, hard glare. His immediate response is to feel hurt and defense, but it's very well-masked, and he soon tosses his hair and smiles unpleasantly. "It's like staring into a mirror... of my former self. Sorry, I thought, like Pokemon, they might be reasoned with or dealt with peacefully. ... I'm not naive and I'm not afraid to kill. I'm just not so stubborn as to deny the possibility another method might work. I can't get stronger if I never learn, that's basic, isn't it?"
He hoped the mocking tone and smug veneer was enough to hide that those words really did hurt... his voice might've shaken, towards the end, but he'll pretend he was fighting back a laugh. There, a short, condescending snort of a laugh.
It hurt. It still hurt.
He'll turn to watch the monsters, both to avoid making anymore eye contact and because he caught a hint of movement out of the corner of his eyes. One seemed to rise to its feet, shaking its head, before retreating. He felt... bereft. Not quite comforted. He should be happy, he supposed, but knowing they could retreat alive, that it didn't have to be to the death... he felt a chill. He suddenly didn't really want to be around Ratatosk. Can Emil please come back?
Trip and Ratatosk are very alike in some ways. He narrows his eyes at Trip's mocking tone, but the shaking in the kid's voice keeps him from taking the bait and lashing back. Not worth it. Things would just get more annoying if he scared Trip away now.
"This isn't your world, and these monsters aren't Pokemon. Some are open to talking... but you're not strong enough to risk that, so don't even try," he scoffs.
When a fallen monster moves, Ratatosk's eyes instantly lock to it. He watches to see what it does... and is disappointed to find it running away instead of approaching him.
"Tch," he clicks his tongue, before scanning the area to see if there are any more threats, or monsters that seem like they're ready to get up.
Nothing. Well... threat's over, it seems. Ratatosk's posture relaxes...
Ratatosk is unaware of Trip's internal struggle, too centered on his own issues and making sure the kid that can't even wield a weapon doesn't get himself killed while in another world.
"Ratatosk...?" Emil is confused for a moment, until Trip clarifies. "Oh, yeah, that's what I meant to ask, sorry... I know I'm the one who defeated these monsters, in Ratatosk mode... But I never thought I'd see you here!"
Oh, a snake? Emil gives Serperior a little wave and a smile, since it seems to be Trip's friend. Maa also takes a step forward to sniff in the direction of Trip and Serperior, curious about them, but keeping his distance.
"You... didn't get hurt, did you?" Emil asks, noticing Trip seemed kind of down.
A sign of respect! Maa can respect Serperior after seeing it fight, too. He wags his tail slowly as he stares at Serperior from afar.
"Oh, that's good," Emil says, relieved. "I'm glad to see you too! I didn't think I would... But, I hope you're not stuck in this world." Maybe Trip will somehow end up back in his world after a while, like Emil did?
"Nice to meet you, Serperior," Emil says with a smile, but the tone of voice gave him pause. "Er, we didn't meet before, right?" He's pretty sure he'd recognize a giant grass snake if he met one...
"Oh, and this is Maa!" Emil gestures at the wolf, who gives a small howl at hearing his name. "He's one of my monster friends."
Trip took out his camera, although he first took pictures of the fallen monsters as a reminder of his weakness, with a heavy expression, before he turned to face Maa.
"... may I?"
He might be stuck, but Trip's gotten rather used to being tossed around worlds... at least he's been lucky enough to encounter people he's known... this place isn't as welcoming as Ultern, though.
Serperior shook his head at Emil's question.
"You didn't meet Serperior, but he heard us talk... I carry my Pokemon on me, so, he remembers you," Trip explained.
Oh, that's Trip's camera, isn't it... He's taking photos of monster corpses? Emil doesn't get it, but he doesn't comment.
"You want to take a photo of Maa?" Emil asked, then turned to Maa. "Maa, stay," he orders, not wanting Maa to be startled by the camera. Emil totally understands wanting to take a photo, Maa is a very pretty wolf after all. He's secretly proud that Trip feels that way, too.
Well, if Trip doesn't look worried about being here, then Emil thinks it's probably fine...
"Oh, in your... Pokeballs, right? That reminds me..." Emil digs out the Pokeball Trip gave him last time. "I tried using it, but it doesn't seem to work on the monsters from this world."
Trip appreciated Emil telling Maa to stay. He won't use any flash, that startles many Pokemon, particularly wild ones... so, he figured it'd be similar for Maa, especially as he's never seen a camera before.
He focused on taking photographs, sometimes stepping back or to a side, sometimes using the zoom lens, before he was satisfied with the pictures he'd taken.
"Thanks."
He then turned his attention back to Emil.
"Is that right...? Hm, might be because they're not Pokemon at all," he said with a frown. "... did you catch any Pokemon in Unova? And do you know how you found your way back? Or did it just... happen."
Maa is very confused about this human pup's movements, so he stares at Trip the entire time he's taking photos. You probably get some cute photos.
While Trip's doing that, Emil looks at Serperior. It's always somehow disconcerting to meet monsters that don't feel like the monsters from his world... Just like Lampent, it gives Emil a feeling of something being missing. If Serperior was a monster from his world, he thinks it'd be a Plant-family, Earth-elemental monster. But it isn't, and that's so odd. Still, Serperior's a beautiful snake.
"No problem. Good job, Maa," Emil says, giving Maa a pat.
"It just happened," Emil nods in confirmation. "I was walking towards that city you directed me to, but before I realized it, I was in my own world. I only noticed when I encountered monsters from my world. So... I didn't really have time to even try to catch any Pokemon. I did see some while walking before that, but only from a distance..."
He didn't seem so lucky, but hey, maybe getting surroundedby hostile monsters is Trip's getting caught in a snowstorm in a strange world...
"Was it far from here? Where you wound up? I wonder if I could get home by walking in the same direction... or maybe, it won't do anything and I just have to wait... like drifting..."
Serperior slightly inclined his head, making a questioning sound.
"Yeah, that was a real relief. I found my friends soon after that, but they had a hard time believing I ended up in another world, even with the map I showed them. The Pokeball not working didn't help either..." Emil sighs, sholders slumping. That had been pretty embarrassing...
"Um, it was on another continent, but... Hold on, let me show you on the map." Emil takes out a map that probably looks better than the one linked! [((ooc:Turns out finding a good world map of this game is difficult given how it's presented in-game... ^^; ))]
"Right now, we're around here," he says, pointing at the desert of Triet in the upper corner of the map, "And back then, I came back here, near the Temple of Ice." He points at continent next to it in the upper-middle. "It was the same place where I was before I ended up in your world... So you'll probably end up in the same place when you return, too."
Drifting? Like on the sea currents? Emil only knows one meaning of that word, and the image of Trip trying to get to the other continent by raft makes him real nervous.
"Uh, I-I wouldn't try to drift to the other continent! I can ask my friend to take you there by his ship i-if you really want to get there?" he quickly says.
"What I saw...? Oh, you mean Pokemon? Let's see..." Emil thinks back on it. "Hmmm... There were some big grey birds, and something that looked like a flying squirrel that flew quickly above me. And some deer-like Pokemon with white fur... They had little ones with them too." Thinking about them puts a smile on Emil's face. They were so cute...
Trip looked at the other areas marked on the continent and raised his brows.... human ranch? He'll have to hold off asking.
"Yes, that would be like drifting in Ultern—n-no... not... making a raft, wait. Listen. I've been to another world, not my own, not by choice, and returned just as suddenly to the time and place I had left behind... that phenomenom is called drifting."
The big grey birds got a smile from Trip. "Did they also have brown or green feathers? ... the flying squirrels in my region are called Emolga. That deer you saw is Sawsbuck. It's brown with white fur only in the winter. Many live around my hometown too, I always see Deerling—their young—running and playing..."
He could share photographs he took, including from his first day on his journey!
[( ooc: I didn't notice all the labels the map had ^^; The human ranches wouldn't be marked since they was already defunct by the time a big event that changed all the maps happened! To summarize it, the world of Aselia was split into two worlds, Sylvarant and Tethe'alla, and at the end of Tales of Symphonia they were fused back together into Aselia. So Tales of Symphonia: Dawn of the New World has a fused world map, which is shared by Tales of Phantasia, which takes place over a thousand years later and has different names for locations. So finding a map of the DotNW world with the place names of DoTNW instead of Phantasia is difficult, and the map I did find labels places that only exist in the original Tales of Symphonia... Anyway, of the places labelled on the map, just pretend "Tethe'alla Base" "Sylvarant Base" "Iselia Human Ranch" "World Tree" and "Mizuho" aren't there! (The World Tree and Mizuho do exist, but their locations are supposed to be secret...) Sorry for the confusion^^;; )]
"It's okay... Maybe if I introduce you to them they'll believe me." Now that he thinks about it, Trip being here means Emil can really introduce him to his friends! He's looking forward to it.
"Oh, so that's what you meant. You've been to other worlds so often you've got a term for it...? That sounds rough." Still, it's better than trying to cross a sea on a raft.
"No, I think they were just grey and black..." Emil nods as he listens. Emolga, Sawsbuck, Deerling... He feels like he should be writing these down. He's got his Monster Book, full of information about the monsters he's met in his world, so it's a bit of a habit. "It's impressive that you remember all of them off the top of your head! I work with monsters too, but I've only really memorized the species names of a few of them. Mostly the common and easy ones, like Wolf, Bugbear, Filifolia, Zombie, Jabber..." He lists off with his fingers.
"Some of those names sound familiar, but... what's a Jabber? It sounds like something from a fairy tale. No clue what Filifolia is either... but the others sound kind of obvious."
At least, for a general idea of what they might resemble!
"Well, I am a Pokemon Trainer, so it's only natural... basic stuff! I have to know the different kinds of Pokemon, so I can easily come up with strategies."
"Jabbers are red bird monsters with a yellow tuft on their head! You might've seen some around here. And Filifolias are plant monsters... Small, round, with two big arm-like leaves poking out of their head." If Emil knew more about Pokemon, he might compare them to Archen and Smoliv in appearance.
"Oh, I see... But even if it's basic in your world, I still think it's impressive." Strategies, huh... Since Emil's not an active participant in battle, he doesn't have direct experience, but he's seen a lot. "Our strategies are usually kind of... thought on the spot based on what happens, I guess. Since there's a lot of us fighting, we just adjust to each others' style and..." Emil trails off as he feels the sand moving underneath. Speaking of thinking on the spot...
"Watch out!" Emil shifts into Ratatosk Mode instantly to tackle Trip (and Serperior, if his reflexes aren't fast enough) out of the way as a huge sandworm with big teeth bursts out of the sand. He rolls on the sand and faces the threat, analysing it on the spot. Maa takes a battle-ready stance as well, growling.
"An Earth Eater? Dammit!" Those aren't usually found around here... Must be because of the environmental changes. The threat level is higher than the other monsters in this area, so Ratatosk makes a quick judgement. "We're no match for it. Retreat!" he orders the others. Maa takes off, but Ratatosk makes sure Trip manages to escape first and keeps the monster distracted if necessary. No retreating for him until everyone else is safe!
Trip thought Emil reminded him a little of Ash and Bianca that way... he admired that. It wasn't something he could do himself, come up with something on the fly. He had to have all the answers first and to plan things out—
Serperior seemed to vanish, moving so quickly, although he felt a bit affronted that Emil&emdash;or, rather, Ratatosk— protected Trip instead.
Trip did not appreciate being tackled, although he froze initially, expression blank, before Ratatosk rolled off. He twisted around, propping himself up on an elbow, glaring at the threat. What is that...?!
Serperior shielded his trainer, moving into a striking position, tail rattling.
Trip's surprised when even Maa flees. "And you?!"
Was this guy serious?!
Serperior seemed to recognize the danger, at least, and pulled his trainer close with his tail, although Trip seemed reluctant to leave... even if Ratatosk had more experience.
The rattling sound of Serperior's tail sounds like the rattling of the tail of a monster that lives in this area, so Ratatosk glances its way on instinct when he hears it, before quickly returning his attention to the Earth Eater.
"I'll run when you run- Gh!" Ratatosk quickly jumps back to avoid an attack. That was a close one. They need to get away quickly, before it's too late-
Was this kid serious?! Weaknesses?! The weakness of a monster like this was a strong group of well-trained fighters that work together, and those were in short supply! Also the Light element, but Ratatosk felt like telling this kid that would make him think it's okay to keep fighting.
"Run away, you idiot! Do you want us both to die?!" Ratatosk snaps, then blocks an attack with his sword, grunting in pain at the force of it. At this rate, he won't be able to last for much longer... This is why he hates working with amateurs!
(Maa is confused when nobody seems to be following it, stopping at a fairly safe distance and looking back at the others.)

[Aha, oops! That's alright ^^ -waves hand- Retcon Trip noticing it away~]

"Well, I am a Pokemon Trainer, so it's only natural... basic stuff! I have to know the different kinds of Pokemon, so I can easily come up with strategies."

Date: 2024-09-14 01:27 pm (UTC)"Oh, I see...

Date: 2024-09-14 01:39 pm (UTC)"An Earth Eater? Dammit!" Those aren't usually found around here... Must be because of the environmental changes. The threat level is higher than the other monsters in this area, so Ratatosk makes a quick judgement. "We're no match for it. Retreat!" he orders the others. Maa takes off, but Ratatosk makes sure Trip manages to escape first and keeps the monster distracted if necessary. No retreating for him until everyone else is safe!
[Serperior's leafy tail makes a rattling sound when it's cornered in the anime ;3;]
Date: 2024-09-14 06:08 pm (UTC)Serperior seemed to vanish, moving so quickly, although he felt a bit affronted that Emil&emdash;or, rather, Ratatosk— protected Trip instead.
"What're its weaknesses...?!"
Trip seemed intent on fighting.
[Sorry, Trip, but Ratatosk has no patience for this]
Date: 2024-09-14 10:00 pm (UTC)"I'll run when you run- Gh!" Ratatosk quickly jumps back to avoid an attack.
[Light's ironically exactly what I planned to have Serperior use...!]
